Historical note

In 1820, an act passed by the Indiana General Assembly and signed by Governor Jonathan Jennings authorized the establishment of the State Seminary at Bloomington. In 1825, the first classes began with an enrollment of 10 male students and one teacher, Baynard Rush Hall. Further legislation by the General Assembly changed the Seminary name to Indiana College in 1828 and to Indiana University in 1838 and also allowed the Board of Trustees to expand the curriculum beyond the classical languages and mathematics to teach "useful arts and sciences" and to attract more students. David Hervey Maxwell served as president of the IU Board of Trustees from 1820 to 1837 and 1841 to 1852 and was known as the "Father of Indiana University." Andrew Wylie was the school's first president and served from 1829 until his death in 1851.
