This collection includes letters; typed documents, including newspaper clippings; financial and legal documents; official township records; meeting minutes, speeches and writings from Alice and Albert Williams and others in Salem, Indiana and Washington County, Indiana and elsewhere ranging from 1818 to 1967 regarding financial and legal business, family histories and reminiscences, items from newspapers, and speeches and writings.

Administrative History
Washington County Historical Society traces its roots to the Old Settlers organization, which began to meet in 1875. It started meeting regularly on September 1, 1879, which is considered the Society's founding date. The name was changed to Washington County Historical Society in 1915. The organization has published a number of books, including The Official Bicentennial Book of the Washington County Historical Society: Celebrating Salem and Washington County, Indiana, 1814-2014. It operates The John Hay Center, consisting of the Stevens Museum, the John Hay Birthplace, the Dean Gallery, the Genealogical Library and Pioneer Village, including an authentic log cabin and has paid staff and many volunteers. The society publishes a semiannual magazine titled, The Historian.
