Administrative History

Washington County Historical Society traces its roots to the Old Settlers organization, which began to meet in 1875. It started meeting regularly on September 1, 1879, which is considered the Society's founding date. The name was changed to Washington County Historical Society in 1915. The organization has published a number of books, including The Official Bicentennial Book of the Washington County Historical Society: Celebrating Salem and Washington County, Indiana, 1814-2014. It operates The John Hay Center, consisting of the Stevens Museum, the John Hay Birthplace, the Dean Gallery, the Genealogical Library and Pioneer Village, including an authentic log cabin and has paid staff and many volunteers. The society publishes a semiannual magazine titled, The Historian.
