Scope and Contents
This letter, which is a copy, was written by Thomas Williams in November 1847 to his father, mother, sisters and brother (or brothers). He wrote about his Mexican War service. Having left Madison on October 31, he went to Jeffersonville, then on the rivers to New Orleans. He wrote: "I know it is an honorable cause, friends, [I] want you to think when you go to the ballot box who is for their country and who is against their country, for we are depending on you for your assisance. We got news from Mexico this morning they have had another very hard battle and killed a great many of our men. ... Tell the boys if they want to do their country any good, now is the time to do it." He ends by telling his family to direct their letters to the "fifth regiment from Indiana, Colonel Henry S. Lane Company."
