Forceythe Willson letter

 Collection — Folder: S1412
Identifier: S1412

Scope and Contents

Two items are in this collection, the handwritten letter and the typed transcription of same. The letter was written on July 2, 1866 by Forceythe W. Willson, from Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is addressed to "Dear Friend." According to the typed transcript, the friend was Maria Howland Conwell, aunt of Forceythe's wife, Elizabeth Conwell Willson. Forceythe is advising Elizabeth that he is sending a package with copies of a book of poems, "The Old Sargeant in State and Other Poems." The copies are for: Cousin Rollin (Conwell), Dr. Holliday, Mr. Cullum, Aunt Winnie (Stilwell) and Uncle Asbury (Conwell). In the last paragraph, Forceythe wrote: "At present I am quite alone, saving our brother Little Marcus, Hiram and my sister having gone to New York to pass the summer with our friends there." He asks his friend to "give my love to Grandmother." The last sentence on the typed transcript states: "Miss Laurel C. Thayer believes this letter was addressed to her mother, Maria Howland Conwell, at Laurel."
