This collection includes typed copies of letters which James O. Walton sent to his wife Mary Ann ranging from February 1864 to January 1865 during the American Civil War, with information about military life, Generals William Sherman and John Bell Hood, the presidential election, and health.

Biographical Note

In 1860, James O. Walton, son of William C. and Nancy Walton, was 16 years old and living in Shelby, Ripley County, Indiana. Born in Ohio, Walton married Mary Ann and they had several children: George, Anthony T., Mary J., Melisse, Anna L. and James W. Walton served in Company H, 10th Indiana Cavalry, 125th Regiment of Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. He was mustered out on August 31, 1865, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. In 1870, the family lived in Cotton, Switzerland County, but ten years later, they were back in Shelby.
