Biographical Note

In 1860, James O. Walton, son of William C. and Nancy Walton, was 16 years old and living in Shelby, Ripley County, Indiana. Born in Ohio, Walton married Mary Ann and they had several children: George, Anthony T., Mary J., Melisse, Anna L. and James W. Walton served in Company H, 10th Indiana Cavalry, 125th Regiment of Volunteers during the U.S. Civil War. He was mustered out on August 31, 1865, at Vicksburg, Mississippi. In 1870, the family lived in Cotton, Switzerland County, but ten years later, they were back in Shelby.
