Scope and Contents
This collection includes original, hand-written letters to and from members of the Vance family from September 8, 1823 until September 11, 1849. There is one undated letter by Arthur to Lawrence about Lawrence running errands for him. Two letters, September 1, 1826 and March 30, 1827, are about Arthur's cousin James Dill. The December 29, 1826 letter to Samuel Vance was written by Noah Noble. On May 22, 1829, Allen Hamilton wrote to Arthur about his dislike of Joseph Holman. July 8, 1842, Algernon S. Griggs wrote to Lawrence about buying land together. September 11, 1849, R. H. Roberts wrote to Lawrence about seeking work on the railroad.

Biographical Note
Arthur St. Clair Vance was born June 20, 1801 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He married Lasenia Noble in 1826. They had six children. Authur served in the Indiana State House for Marion County during 1848-18449. He was a lawyer, farmer, and member of the Whig party. Arthur died September 28, 1849.
Samuel C. Vance, an officer of the United States Army, served in the Northwest Territory from 1791-1802. In Lawrenceburg, Indiana, Samuel was a merchant and land speculator from 1803 to 1830. He was the Dearborn County Clerk (1803-1813) and register, U.S. Land Office at Fort Wayne, Allen County (1823-1829).
Lawrence M. Vance was born in 1816 and worked for the Lawrenceburg and Upper Mississippi Railroads.
