Scope and Contents
This typed manuscript is entitled "From Indian Trail to Airline" with the subtitle "A Brief History of Transportation in Marion County." The year 1940 is on the title page as well as on the contents page, which includes Harry Osborne's signature in ink. The contents page is an index with topics listed alphabetically from "Airlines" to "Union Station." Mr. Osborne gives names of contributors and their companies on the page following the contents. Some of the subjects included in this paper are: Dandy Trail, Epizootics Epidemic, Interurban Lines, Motor Freight, Omnibus Line, River Transportation, Stage Coach Lines, Traces, Traction Terminal, and Tunnel - Illinois Street (for the trains to go over). A few maps are included among the pages and on larger paper at the end.
The single page on Epizootics Epidemic states: "An interesting and serious incident occurred in Indianapolis in 1872. An epidemic of Pink Eye or "Epizootics," as it was called, broke out affecting almost every horse and mule in the city. Hundreds of animals died and business and transportation was paralyzed for about a month. Street cars (horse) were stopped; some grocery and merchandise deliveries were made with oxen and some carts and light wagons were even pulled by men. The epidemic passed as mysteriously as it appeared."
