Scope and Contents

This typed letter is on Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company letterhead with two black and white etchings at the top. The small picture shows the First Studebaker Shop, dated 1850. The larger picture has a caption, thus: "Studebaker Vehicle Works, South Bend, Ind., U.S.A., Largest in the World Covering 101 Acres." The upper left corner lists: J. M. Studebaker, president; George M. Studebaker, vice president; Clement Studebaker, Jr., treasurer; and J. M. Studebaker, Jr., secretary. The nine branch offices are located in: "New York City; Chicago; San Francisco; Kansas City; Portland, Ore.; Seattle; Salt Lake City; Denver; and Dallas, Tex."

The letter is addressed to John C. Shaffer, Pres. Evening Post, Chicago, Illinois, and is dated December 23, 1909. John M. Studebaker expresses his regret that he is not able to attend the testimonial banquet in honor of Mr. Shaffer on December thirtieth. Mr. Studebaker wrote that he sent one thousand invitations to "my friends all over the country and especially to the many old employees of our factory." More than 300 of these people worked for Studebaker from 20 to 45 years.
