John D. Strachan collection
Collection — Folder: S1260
Identifier: S1260
Scope and Contents
Enclosed in an envelope because of its fragile condition is the original manuscript of Ariel E. Drapier's book: "The Standard Swift Writing, The Elements of Stenography, reduced to moveable types and arranged for the use of schools," published in 1845. A paper at the back of the volume tells about Ariel's son William H. Drapier, who was also a stenographer like his father.
There are three typed pages of President Benjamin Harrison's speech in El Paso, Texas, on April 21, 1891, with shorthand symbols written above the words.
A typed paper tells about the 6th annual convention of the National Shorthand Reporters Association in 1904 at which John D. Strachan spoke about Ariel E. Drapier's "Early Shorthand Reporting in Indiana." Mr. Strachan explained how Mr. Drapier used a Cincinnati foundry to cast the shorthand characters. The book created by Mr. Drapier was destroyed by fire in South Bend, and all copies were believed to be lost. Ariel lived in Indiana from age ten until his death in Mishawaka in 1877. Ariel and his son William reported the proceedings of the Indiana Legislature beginning in 1858.
