This collection includes correspondence, receipts, postcards, papers, invitations, bank books, ledgers, a poll book, ephemera, and realia from John B. Vorhies and family, in Indianapolis, Indiana, ranging from 1882 to 1933 and undated, regarding personal matters, local Democratic politics, World War I, and business concerns.

There is also an oversize high school diploma for Dow W. Vorhies dated June 11, 1895 (OB243).

Biographical Note

John Berghen Vorhies was born to Isaac B. (1801-1871) and Rachel Bourwer (Whitenack) Vorhies (1801-1879) on August 10, 1826 in Kentucky. A farmer and carpenter, Vorhies settled in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1871. Vorhies married Lucinda Lemaster (1838-1913) in Marion County, Indiana on November 22, 1871. The couple had a daughter, Harriet Vail (1873-1876), and a son, Dow Wright (1876-1939). The Vorhies purchase land on Bluff Road between Troy Avenue and Sumner Street. John B. Vorhies died on September 2, 1893 in Johnson County, Indiana and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis. Dow W. Vorhies resided at the family farm until his death in 1939.
