Biographical Note

George Upfold was born on May 7, 1796 in Guilford, Surrey, England. He immigrated to the United States and served as an Episcopal priest in New York City (1820-1831); Pittsburg, Pennsylvania (1831-1850); and Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana (1850-1854). He became bishop of the Episcopal Church in Indiana (1849-1865). Upfold resided in Indianapolis (1857-1872).

He and his wife Sophia had two children, both girls. Upfold died August 26, 1872 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
