Scope and Contents

The collection includes Alfred Pering's correspondence with his fiancée, Eda Carter, while he was in Salem and she was in Bloomington (1852-1953); his letters while he was traveling to Louisville, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City (1869); land documents of the Pering and Carter families in Monroe and Washington counties (1821-ca. 1900); newspaper clippings (1829-1920); other family and business letters; and transcripts of letters written by Pering’s father, Cornelius Pering, from Bloomington to his family in England (1833).
