Scope and Contents

This collection contains copies of four typewritten letters sent to David Burroughs of Geneseo, New York requesting his testimony in a court case involving Russell & Company and J.C. Norton ranging from 1886 to 1887. The letters are from Attorney O.B. Houting of Dayton, Ohio on November 22, 1886, Attorney T.C. McIntosh of Indianapolis, Indiana on November 29, 1886), L.C. Royer of Dayton, Ohio on December 10, 1886 and January 1, 1887. This collection also includes a handwritten letter by J.C. Norton from Mt. Morris, New York to Jay Westinghouse regarding the lawsuits brought against Russell & Company and attempts by Royer to get Norton indicted for perjury on January 17, 1887.

Administrative History

C. M. Russell & Co. was founded in 1842 by Charles M. Russell, Nathan S. Russell and Clement Russell. The company manufactured threshing machines, railroad cars, and steam traction engines. After the death of Charles M. Russell the company changed its name to the Russell & Co. and was incorporated in 1878. The company was sold in 1927 and continued on as the Russell Service Co. until 1942.
