This collection includes a letter and envelope sent to Elizabeth R. (McRae) New (Mrs. John C. New) from the Indianapolis Firemen's Benefit Association and dated February 19, 1885. The letter is a thank-you for her "kind remembrance" and "bounteous repast" she supplied to the firemen.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth R. (McRae) New was the second wife of John C. New, Treasurer of the United States (1875-1876) under President Grant and U.S. Consul General, London, England, (1889-1893) and the mother of Senator Harry S. New. New was born in Louisiana on February 4, 1845 and died in Indianapolis, Indiana on February 19, 1935.
