Scope and Contents
The collection contains the diary, pension, and letter of John Myers. Myers’s diary entries begin on May 10, 1864, at Ringgold, Georgia, and ends on May 30, 1865 at Washington, D.C. This consists of 31 pages Xeroxed from the original small pages, 6 ½ wide x 4” high. From pages 32 to 39, John listed his finances, giving the total of $650.00 which he received while in the U.S. army service. These financial entries, in Millersburg, Indiana, begin on June 23, 1865 and end on Oct. 20, 1865. There are two columns listing receipts and expenses.
On May 10, 1864, the Regiment marched with Sherman’s army on its Atlanta campaign. It was engaged almost constantly in skirmishing until September 1, participating in the battles of Dallas, Kennesaw, Lost Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and other places around Atlanta. John recorded dates with short entries, which includes distances marched and soldiers wounded or killed. His last diary entry is about being reviewed in Washington City.

Biographical Note
John D. Myers was in Company I, 74th Indiana Volunteers, which was partially organized at Fort Wayne and mustered into service on August 21, 1862. He was born in Indiana in November 1841 to Abram L. Myers (born in Virginia) and Isabella (born in Maryland). In 1860, John was 17 years old and living with his father, age 42; his mother, age 38; brother Francis, 19; Bethana, 16; Mary 14; Sarah, 12; and Elizabeth, 9. The 1880 federal census lists John D. Myers in the same place as 20 years earlier, Millersburg, near Clinton, Elkhart County, Indiana, with his wife Elizabeth, 32, and daughters Edith, 8, and Marietta, 6. John was a house carpenter in 1880. In 1900, John was 58, Elizabeth was 52, daughter Edith was 27, and son Hubert was 18. John died on September 29, 1908 at the age of 66 in Goshen, Indiana.
