This collection includes the copy of a letter and envelope from Joseph F. McCarthy to Seth Hammond on November 23, 1862. Writting from Camp Carrington in Indianapolis, Indiana, McCarthy describes the business of his army regiment while waiting to leave for Arkansas as well as news of people from home.

Biographical Note

Joseph F. McCarthy of South Bend, Indiana served as sergeant and clerk in Company L of the 1st Cavalry Regiment, 28th Regiment Indiana Volunteers from November 14, 1862 to August 1, 1863, in the United States Army during the Civil War. McCarthy may then have enlisted as a commissary company sergeant in Company D of the 7th Indiana Cavalry, from September 3, 1863 to February 18, 1866.
