This collection includes correspondence, copybooks, diaries, business account books, and papers from Nathaniel Preston in the United States, as well as naval account books, a diary, and correspondence from William M. Preston, all ranging from 1821 to 1918, regarding banking, personal affairs, and navy business.

Biographical Note
Nathaniel Preston was born on April 11, 1808 in Brookfield, Vermont to Charles and Sarah (Flint) Preston. He was one of at least nine children. Preston taught in schools in Licking County, Ohio from 1831 to 1834; then at Vincennes, Indiana from 1835 to 1836; and finally moving to Terre Haute, Indiana in 1836, teaching there from 1836 to 1837. From 1837 to 1842, he clerked at the State Bank of Indiana in Terre Haute and was cashier from 1842 to 1849.
Preston married Charlotte Wood on May 19, 1843 in Vigo County, Indiana, and they had four children: William, Margaret, Nathaniel and John. He farmed from 1850 to 1871. Preston died in November of 1871 and is buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Terre Haute.
