This collection includes autographed, signed documents from Jeremiah Johnson and others in Indiana ranging from 1813 to 1851 and undated regarding receipts, promissory notes, contracts, land documents, and business and personal correspondence. There is also an oversize folder of materials ranging from 1822 to 1849 (OB218).

Biographical Note
Jeremiah Johnson was born August 23, 1792 in Killingly, Connecticut. He served in the Connecticut militia during the War of 1812. Johnson moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1820 and married Susan Johnson in Marion County, Indiana on October 19, 1823. They had nine children and moved to Hendricks County, Indiana in 1855 or 1856. Johnson served in the Indiana House of Representatives from 1834 to 1835, representing Marion County. He was a farmer, teacher, sailor, brickmaker, storekeeper, speculator and tavern keeper. He built a hotel, steam mill and store at Bridgeport, in Marion County. He was a tax collector and jailor in Marion County, then a constable in Hendricks County in 1863. Johnson died on March 20, 1976 and was buried in the Clayton East Cemetery, Clayton, Indiana.
