Biographical Note
Daniel Jenckes and his family. of Welsh ancestry, came to Terre Haute, Indiana from Providence, Rhode Island, beginning in 1816. Daniel had three brothers and several sisters. He and his brother John established the first distillery in Vigo County, and he had a free African-American person in his employ. He traveled from Vincennes, Indiana to Rhode Island, where his sisters still lived, in 1819. He married Rachel Ewing in Vincennes, Indiana in May, 1820. He and his brother John bought land in 1822 in Vigo County, and he was admitted to practice as an attorney. He was later appointed guardian for Pamela Sisson and for Phebe and Phillip. He served as an associate Circuit Court judge in 1824, then from 1836 to 1839. There were four people in his household in 1840. He is said to have died off the coast of Africa of a tropical fever.
