This collection includes business papers, mortgages, deeds, indentures, insurance certificates, tax receipts, and daybooks and an account book from Osgood's physician practice, and tax receipts for various properties from Howard G. Osgood in Owen, Floyd and Monroe counties, Indiana, ranging from 1858 to 1912, relating to Osgood's personal life and business.

Biographical Note
Howard G. Osgood was born in Franklin County, Massachusetts in September of 1833 and attended Amherst academy for one year. He studied with a practicing physician, then finished his studies with physicians in Greenfield, Massachusetts and by completing a year at the Cincinnati Medical College. Osgood relocated in June 1856 to Bloomington, Indiana, then to Gosport, Indiana where he worked as a physician for fifty years, initially in practice with Dr. Young. After Dr. Young left, Osgood was joined by Dr. Caleb L. Ritter, who later married his eldest daughter, Anna.
During U.S. Civil War, Osgood served in the Fifth Indiana Volunteer Calvary as assistant surgeon from January 29, 1863 to May 25, 1864, when he resigned due to ill health. He married Harriet "Hattie" Lyons (1836-1890) on February 24, 1859 in Owen County, Indiana. They had four daughters, Anna, Elizabeth Eunice, Lora, and Hattie, who did not survive infancy. Osgood died in 1913 and was buried in the Gosport Cemetery.
