Jacob Garretson letter

Scope and Contents

This collection contains a January 17, 1852 letter written by J. Garretson of Philadelphia and sent to "Theo". His letter recounts his experiences and observations during a trip through Ohio and Indiana. He notes the depressed wheat prices in Ohio and that Indiana was in much better condition with the pork trade being the staple of the state. He shares his thoughts about his visits to Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Vincennes, and Madison, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio. He also mentions the fact that the Ohio River was frozen over for the first time since 1838 and he relates his travels back to Philadelphia by railroad.

Biographical Note

Jacob Garretson was a merchant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was born on March 8, 1816 and passed away on October 30, 1899. He was the son of Cornelius and Ann Garretson and he had a brother named Theodore (1824-1888). Research suggests that he is the "J. Garretson" who authored the letter in the collection.
