Scope and Contents
The collection of 50 items includes letters regarding the operation and finances of the Wabash and Erie Canal (1850-1854); correspondence with Daniel W. Voorhees regarding a disagreement over a railroad lawsuit (1873); reports on expenditures of New Albany and Terre Haute schools (1868); bids and bills for construction of a building in Terre Haute (1864); and other business papers. Among the correspondents were Charles Butler, John Dowling, and Daniel W. Voorhees. The documents are all handwritten in ink on various size papers.

Biographical Note
Thomas Dowling (1806-1876) was a politician, businessman, and newspaper publisher in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana. He served six terms as a Whig member of the Indiana House of Representatives from 1836 through 1849. From 1832 to 1845, he published a newspaper. Dowling was a trustee for the Wabash and Erie Canal in the 1850s. He served on the Terre Haute City Council from 1867 to 1871; was an officer of the Terre Haute Savings Bank from 1869 to 1876; and was Vigo County Commissioner in 1873.
On March 27, 1856, Thomas Dowling married Sarah J. Sibley and they had four children: John, Mary, Jennie, and Phenelon. Dowling died on December 6, 1876 and wsa buried in Terre Haute.
