Scope and Contents

This collection contains two copies of a journal transcript written by Mr. Condit in 1852 detailing his journey from Terre Haute to New York and back again. Of particular note are sections on Niagra and the Cincinnati area. The transcript has been annotated to include short descriptions of some of the locations where Mr. Condit visited during his journey.

Biographical Note/Historical Note/Administrative History

Blackford Condit was born during 1829 and was a graduate of Wabash College in 1854 and the Lane Theological Seminary in 1857. After graduating, he became ordained and served in two churches, as well as doing some postgraduate work at the Union Theological Seminary in New York. In 1862, Mr. Condit married Sarah Mills. In 1864, he became the minister at the Terre Haute Presbyterian Church, where he remained until poor health forced him into semiretirement in 1875.
