Scope and Contents

This collection contains a photocopy of a notebook kept by Mr. Colton in the late 1870s and 1880s. In large part, it contains accounts of his journeys to and from the United States and England, complete with accurate accounting of time spent and miles traveled. In addition to the accounts, Mr. Colton took many notes on feats of engineering and sea exploration of the time. Of particular note, are sections on the Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. The notebooks also contains a few humorous moral tales.

John Colton Jr. born in 1814, originally of Lincolnshire, England, United Kingdom, immigrated to the United States with his daughters Mary and Emma during 1873 and eventually became a resident of Evansville, Indiana.
