This collection contains a copy of Catlin’s diary kept while an army doctor during the Mexican-American War. Catlin writes about the diseases and injuries faced by solders, the places he visited, and the Battle of Buena Vista.

Biographical Note

Hiram Wesley Catlin was born November 27, 1820, in Indiana. He attended Louisville Medical College in Kentucky, and served as a surgeon in the Second Regiment, Indiana Infantry, during the Mexican-American War. Upon returning to Indiana, Catlin married Rachel Hickman on January 6, 1848, in Floyd County, Indiana. In 1853, he served as a member of the Indiana General Assembly. Catlin and his family moved to St. Peter, Minnesota, in... 1855. Catlin lived there and worked as a physician until his death, May 26, 1861.
