Biographical Note
John H. Butler was born on October 17, 1812 in Pennsylvania to Jonathan and Nancy Hopkins Butler. They moved to Indiana in 1819. He married Nancy Chase on January 3, 1843 and they had two children, Noble Chase and Charles. He was an attorney in Salem, Indiana from 1839-1866 and in New Albany, 1866-68. He served as a delegate from his district in the Republican Convention which nominated Abraham Lincoln as president in 1860. He was appointed Judge of the 27th Judicial District of Indiana in 1868. He died on June 22, 1900 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana.
