Biographical Note

Martha Carver Bishop was born on March 3, 1867 to John and Clerey Carver in Straughn, Indiana; growing up in Benton and Newton Counties. She taught school in Illinois for four years and married Hanford Bishop, who was from Nebraska. They lived in Nebraska, Missouri and Arkansas and had three children: T. Vernon, Clarice, and John Donald. She became a resident of Indianapolis in 1905, and in 1932, she became a regular contributor to the "Hoosier Homespun" columns in the Indianapolis News. She published songs and poems and cowrote a book entitled, "Hoosier Courtships in the House and Buggy Days." She died on March 1, 1950 in Indianapolis.
