Scope and Contents
The collection consists of a 32 page (not all pages are numbered, several chapters are numbered 1-,last page), typed and photocopied document with handwritten corrections, written by Larken L. Beeman and dated 8-24-1964 and 12-16-1964, entitled “Rural Life” in and around school district 3, Marion Township, Boone County, IN from 1876-1900.
Chapter 1 is about the school, which was named Baker’s Corner in honor of Mr. Baker. Teachers named were Mr. Jones; Jacob Cobb, a local man; Andrew Clark, who was studying to be a doctor; Maggie Smith, who organized the school into eight grades; John Gray, who lived in Lebanon, walked home to his family on Friday evening and back to the school every Monday morning, a distance of eight miles and organized sports, including baseball and cricket; Charlie Stout and Bertha Campbell. Specifics about classmates, school studies, recreation, and the last day gala are mentioned.
Chapter 2 includes “Forests”, discovering forests, wild animals, various types of roads, “Means of Travel”, “Social Life”, “Political Campaigns”, and the Elisha Beeman family farm.
Chapter 3 discusses husking bees, other social events and holidays, superstitions and his family history.

Biographical Note
Larken [Larkin] Louis Beeman [Beaman] was the son of Elisha Cragun Beeman and Catherine [Catharine] Lucas, born Jan. 19, 1871 in Indiana. He married Stella B. Card in Marion County, Indiana, Aug. 1906. He died Jan. 9, 1967 in Los Angeles, California.
