Biographical Note
William Judkins was born May 25, 1826 in Brown County, Ohio and was moved to Alto, in Howard County, Indiana when very young. He was mustered into the military in New Albany, Indiana on June 20, 1846 and was mustered out at New Orleans, Louisiana on June 16, 1847, having served in Company C, 1st Regiment Indiana Volunteers for the Mexican War, in General Taylor's campaign, the battle of Buena Vista and other engagements. He married Sarah E. Tull of Shelby County in Shelby County on April 5, 1849. They had six children.
During the Civil War, he enrolled as a captain of Company H, 16th Regiment Indiana Volunteers on May 14, 1861 and was mustered out at Washington, D.C., on May 23, 1862. He then mustered into Company D, 18th Regiment Indiana Volunteers Infantry, in which he served during the remainder of the Civil War.
After the war, he became a merchant and postmaster in Fairland, Indiana. He lived in Indianapolis for many years, dying there on August 30, 1900. He is buried at Boggstown Cemetery, in Boggstown, Indiana.
