Historical Note
Benjamin Harrison purchased the land for his Indianapolis home in 1867. Construction did not begin until the spring of 1874 and lasted twenty months. Harrison lived in the home from its completion until his death in 1901, with the exception of his time in Washington as a U.S. Senator and as President.
The Arthur Jordan Foundation purchase the home in 1937 and used it as a women’s dormitory for students of the Jordan Conservatory of Music. When the Conservatory joined Butler University as Jordan College in 1951, the home was opened to the public. The home was designated a National Historic Landmark in January 1964. In 1966, the Arthur Jordan Foundation established the President Benjamin Harrison Foundation to maintain and operate the home. A restoration project was completed in 1974. The current address of the President Benjamin Harrison Home is 1230 North Delaware Street.
