Biographical Note

Max Bahr was born in 1874 in Indianapolis. After graduating from Central College of Physicians and Surgeons he took post-graduate work at the University of Berlin, where he graduated as a doctor of psychological medicine in 1908. In 1912 he married Wilhelmina Helwig in Indianapolis, where they lived. Bahr is best known for his work as the superintendent of Central State Hospital. He began working there in 1898, and was appointed superintendent in 1923. Bahr held other posts as well within the psychiatric field, including an appointment as a consultant on the board of examiners of the United States penitentiary in Terre Haute, a professorship with the Indiana University School of Medicine Psychiatrics Department, and president of the Indianapolis Medical Society. Bahr was instrumental in de-stigmatizing the mentally ill (e.g. in 1927, changing the name of Central Indiana Hospital for Insane to Central State Hospital). In March, 1952 Bahr retired from Central State Hospital; he died of a heart attack in December of the same year.
