Myrtillus Satterthwaite collection

 Collection — Folder: OBD003
Identifier: OBD003

Scope and Contents

This collection contains the galley proof for Hoosier Courtships in the Buggy Days and related advertising materials by Myrtillus Satterthwaite circa 1943. Satterthwaite relates situations he has known (many are recollections of his family) or stories he has heard. The geographical setting of the book is southern Indiana, including Edinburg and Shelbyville, as well as Johnson County, Shelby County, and Jennings County. The book covers more than courtship, including recollections of early schools and McGuffey readers, early forms of transportation, and the social activities and customs of early Indiana such as barn raisings and corn husking bees. The chapters often offer a collection of stories under on title, and the commentary of the text can cover a host of subjects in providing background for the stories. The book was co-authored by Mrs. Martha C. Bishop and has a copyright date of 1943.
