Scope and Contents
This collection includes one original cartoon entitled "Locked!" from Rube Goldberg to John C. Rugenstein that possibly appeared in the Indianapolis News. The cartoon is dated February 3, 1943 and April 1943. It depicts Adolph Hitler trying to open a door marked "Exit to Turkey" which is locked by the "Churchill Agreement".

Biographical Note
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist best known for his zany invention cartoons. He was born in San Francisco on the 4th of July, 1883 – and graduated from U. Cal Berkeley with a degree in engineering. His first job at the San Francisco Chronicle led to early success, but it wasn’t until he moved to NYC and began working for Hearst publications that he became a household name. Rube Goldberg is the only person ever to be listed in the Merriam Webster Dictionary as an adjective. It’s estimated that he did a staggering 50,000 cartoons in his lifetime.

Historical Note
One of the conclusions from the Tehran Conference was that it would be desirable that Turkey come in to the war on the side of the Allies. Also, Stalin agreed that if Turkey found herself at war with Germany, and as a result Bulgaria declared war on Turkey or attacked her, the Soviet would immediately be at war with Bulgaria.
