Scope and Contents

This collection includes a November 19, 1823 letter sent by Moses Kirkpatrick of Franklin County, Pennsylvania to James Gilliland of Fayette County, Indiana regarding financial matters and news of local families back in Pennsylvania; four land grants issued on February 15, 1823 to John Gilliland and four grants issued to James in April 1824 for property in Fayette County; a $200.00 bond and an indenture for a quit claim deed between John Gilliland and William McKinney, James McKinney, William Owen, Adam Kendall, and Jesse McKinney, dated October 14, 1825 and witnessed by Manlove Caldwell and James Gilliland; a land grant issued on April 20, 1824 to Robert McCann of Fayette County; and an October 12, 1827 indenture between Isaac and Ann King and Ezra Hunt.

Biographical Note

James and John Gilliland were early settlers of Fayette County, Indiana, arriving from Franklin County, Pennsylvania in 1822. James married Annas Kirkwood (1790-1876) on August 12, 1824 and John married Mary Kirkwood (1888-1865) on June 7, 1826. They bought several tracts of land in Posey Township and John later deeded one and a half acres to the Christian Church of Bentonville for church and burial purposes. Born around 1781, James passed away at the age of 73 on June 29, 1854. John was born around 1789 and passed away at the age of 87 on September 5, 1876. Both men and their wives are buried in the Bentonville Christian Church Cemetery.
