Scope and Contents There are four photocopied letters in this collection, written between 1861 and 1864. The early correspondence from William Shields to his brother, written from the field of battle, refers to Confederate prisoners taken and his company's proximity to the Confederate forces. Shields expresses some concern about resolution of a debt and makes reference to the expected arrival of the paymester.

Monroe from Triune, Tennessee while he was serving in the Union Army during the U.S. Civil War. John Rector had returned home from serving with Company A, 82nd Indiana Infantry and Monroe was a captain in the company.
