John Upfold Pettit papers

Scope and Contents This collection includes original letters from John Upforld Pettit, ranging from 1840 to 1853, addressed to his brother, Milton Howard Pettit, including several while serving as American consul at Maranham, Brazil (1850-1853). Also included is Pettit's 1979 publication, "Answer to the Toast, The Old Psi Upsilon."

There are also newspapers, ranging from 1797 to 1865 (OBC062).

The manuscript was dedicated to James Madison Lewis and the copy was made September 11, 1952 for Harold Lewis. The first folder has letters and the narrative from the 1850-1862, and the second one has letters from 1863-1887.Josiah wrote about his second trip to the east. Among the things he left behind were "the Indiana Republican meetings where the bold friends of country and freedom turn out in their thousands." Kirkpatrick family collection

Scope and Contents This collection includes materials collected by members of the Kirkpatrick family from 1860 to 1934. The collection is primarily correspondence from Captain Thomas Kirkpatrick of Kokomo, Indiana ranging from 1863 to 1888 regarding matters of the 13th Indiana Volunteer Infantry and also includes news clippings, cards, pressed flowers, ribbons, and a scrapbook.

There are also two land grants from 1849 issued to Francis O'Dowd for land in Winamac and in Indianapolis (OB103).

Scope and Contents This collection is a typed copy of Leonard H. Mahan's diary from January 3, 1862 through August 6, 1863. The Battle of Shiloh, April 6 and 7, 1862, is on pages 2 and 3. Entries for 1863 begin on page 7. His final entry on August 6, 1863 states: "Strong talk of an early move. Suppose we will start on Monday for East Tenn. or Chattanooga. Army in splendid condition."
