Scope and Contents This collection contains a typewritten copy of a narrative given by LaPorte County, Indiana pioneer James L. Monahan and written down by James W. Lester, secretary of the Gary Historical Society, in the spring of 1923 when Monahan was 98 years old. The narrative relates his childhood experiences as a pioneer living among the Potawatomi and gives an eyewitness account of their forced removal from Northern Indiana.
