Scope and Contents J. B. Varnum wrote this letter to General J. Mason, Superintendent of Indian Trade, on November 10, 1809, from Michilimackinac (Fort Mackinac) in Michigan. Mr. Varnum said that he arrived "at this place from Chicago" after traveling for eleven days. He reported on the shipment of goods which was received at that place. He was living in a house that had been unoccupied for two years. Mr. Varnum wrote: "I found it to be so old and so very much out of repair that I have not thought proper to issue...
