The early correspondence from William Shields to his brother, written from the field of battle, refers to Confederate prisoners taken and his company's proximity to the Confederate forces. Shields expresses some concern about resolution of a debt and makes reference to the expected arrival of the paymester.

This collection consists of photostats of a list showing subscribers to a map of Indianapolis created by William Sullivan in 1836, which included prominent Indianapolis citizens such as Noah Noble, Henry P. Coburn, Morris Morris, S. A. Fletcher, George Lockerbie, and Thomas McQuat. There are also five letters from William Sullivan to his agent, Jonathan Meredith, and others on August 27, 1838 concerning the sale of the map.
