Scope and Contents

This collection consists largely of the genealogical research done by Edith L. Moore and other members of her family, ranging from 1848 to 2005. Moore collected her own writings, family research, correspondence about her research, and created family trees. The smaller series within the collection consist of personal papers relating specifically to Edith Moore, her early life and career, the entirety of her correspondence and that of other members of her family, family papers, especially of her mother and father, photographs and postcards, and other miscellany that largely consists of various publications that cannot be attributed to any one person, drawings, and realia.

Biographical / Historical

Edith Lodema Moore was born in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana on September 30, 1914 to Earl J. and Mary Almeda (Beckley) Moore.

Earl J. Moore was born January 13, 1882 in Kunkle Village, Williams County, Ohio and worked in building and construction. He also became a draftsman and detailer within his carpentry work.(Mary) Almeda "Allie" Beckley was born December 13, 1882 in Avilla, Indiana, where she spent her early life and later worked as a telephone operator. She went to Tri-State University and taught prior to her marriage to Earl J. Moore. She was interested in art and illustration.

After living in Louisville, Kentucky, the Moores moved to Indianapolis where their daughter Edith gradutaed from School 76 and attended Shortridge High School from 1929 to 1933 where her favorite subject was art. In the fall of 1933, she enrolled in the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis on a scholarship. In 1939, she was painting and shared a studio with Herb Kantzer. Her career in art had her cross paths with L. S. Ayres and the home furnishing department. She worked at Ayres for 29 years as an interior designer. Later in her life she did a significant amount of genealogy research into her principle families, Moore, Beckley, Kelly, along with other related families. Edith Moore died on February 21, 2011 and was buried with her parents in Lake View Cemetery, Kendallville, Indiana.
