Biographical / Historical
Edith Moore was born in Kendallville, Noble County, Indiana on September 30, 1914 to Earl J. Moore and M. Almeda Beckley. Almeda was born December 13, 1882 in Avilla, Indiana, where she spent her early life and later worked as a telephone operator. Almeda went to Tri-State University and taught prior to her marriage to Earl. Almeda, known as Allie, was interested in art and illustration. Earl also became a draftsman and detailer within his carpentry work. After also living in Louisville, Kentucky, the Moores moved to Indianapolis where edit attended Shortridge High School from 1929 to 1933 where her favorite subject was art. In the fall of 1933, Edith enrolled in the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis on a scholarship. In 1939, she was painting and shared a studio with Herb Kantzer. Her career in art had her cross paths with L. S. Ayres and the home furnishing department. She worked at Ayres for 29 years as an interior designer. Later in her life she did a significant amount of genealogy research into her principle families, Moore, Beckley, and Kelly, and other related families.
