Biographical / Historical
Merton W. Grills was born May 20, 1872, to James and Laura (Ward) Grills. He graduated from Richsquare Academy in 1891. Grills taught for 18 years. He also ran an insurance company, did interior design, and was a long-time volunteer firefighter. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts throughout his life. In 1953, Grills donated a rare bird egg collection to Earlham College. He was considered a colorful local character around town and was a friend of a lot of people. Merton Grills passed away on October 20, 1958, in Richmond, Indiana after being hit in the head by a felled tree.
