Biographical Note

Dr. Walter O. Shriner was born November 1, 1895 to William Owen and Anne Belle McCombs Shriner. His siblings included James, Zora, Richard, Jerry and Charles Shriner. He graduated from Union High School and attended Indiana State University where he received his Bachelors degree. He also attended the University of Michigan where he received both his Masters and Doctorate degrees. Walter Shriner was the chairman of the mathematics department at Indiana State University for 35 years, as well a past president of the mathematics section of the Mathematics Association of America, past president of the Indiana Academy of Science, and past president of the mathematics section of the Indiana State Teachers Association. He was a veteran of World War I serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. Walter Shriner married Mary Virginia Cuppy in 1924. They had five children, William, Zoe, Martha, Sally, and Mary. He died on October 19, 1979.
