Biographical Note
John Dudley Long was born in Columbus, Indiana on September 7, 1876 to David F. and Mary A. Downs Long, the fifth of eight children. He attended the United States Military Academy West Point and graduated early along with the rest of the class of 1899 due to the Spanish American War. John D. Long later attended Infantry and Calvary School graduating in 1906, and Mounted Service School graduating in 1909, he later attended a Calvary School advanced course in 1925 and later graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College in 1926. In 1928 he married Mabel Neal Burr in Manila, Philippines. After his retirement from the US Army in September of 1940 with the rank of colonel John moved to Baltimore. John D. Long died February 9th 1965 and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
