Biographical / Historical
William Shirley was born January 20, 1816 in London, England. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Anness Shirley a earthenware dealer. William was sent to Brussels to learn the queensware business. At 18 he traveled to Baltimore Maryland where he started working in a wholesale crockery business. He purchased a crockery business in 1843 and later sold it in 1855. He married Ellen G. Davis June 20, 1840. They were the parents of Eliza, Henry C., Hannah, and William W. Shirley. Ellen Shirley died August 26, 1898. William Shirley died December 19, 1900. Both William and Ellen are buried in Green Mount Cemetery along with two of their children.
