Biographical Note
Irwin Eugene "Gene" Van Sickle was born on January 11, 1907, in Vermilion County, Illinois to Jesse Irwin and Ethel Givens Van Sickle. He graduated from Arsenal Tech High School in 1925 and later spent two years at Purdue University studying engineering. Gene Van Sickle married his first wife Thelma Horrall on June 5, 1928 in Frankfort, Indiana and they had one daughter Sue Carolyn born on April 6, 1933. He married his second wife Rosealie Doerflein on February 14, 1946 in New Orleans. They had one daughter Nancy Jean who was born on May 23, 1947.
Gene Van Sickle became interested in radios at an early age and founded the Van Sickle Radio Company in 1932. He installed the sound systems located at the Indiana State fairgrounds coliseum, the Purdue Music hall, the Union Building ballroom, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Gene Van Sickle retired from his radio company in 1975.
He was involved with many societies including, the Holland Society of New York, Society of Colonial Wars, Sons of the American Revolution, the Society of Indiana Pioneers, and the Rotary Club.
Gene Van Sickle died on June 8th, 1997 and was interred at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.
