Biographical Note

Daniel F. Hill was born in Hendricks County, Indiana around 1840. He was enrolled as a student until the U.S. Civil War began. Hill served in Company I, 11th Indiana Regiment, first enlisting as a sergeant on August 31, 1861. Hill was discharged on November 3, 1862 for "general debility, resulting from disease contracted in the service." Hill worked as a merchant until he reenlisted on May 18, 1864 in the 132nd Indiana Regiment for a little over three months. He enlisted a third time on February 21, 1865 as a captain in Company G, 148th Indiana Regiment and was discharged a final time on September 5, 1865.
