Scope and Contents

The collection consists primarily of Joseph Bailly's accounts, financial journals, and record books of his fur trade business in Indiana and Michigan ranging from 1789 to 1847. Also included are business correspondence (1800-1801), letters and other papers relating to the settlement of his estate (1836), as well as account books from the Chicago and Lake Superior Mining Company (1846-1847). The collection also contains various photographs and post cards of the family other locations.

Biographical Note

Joseph Bailly, born April 7, 1774, was a fur trader at Michilimackinac (1794-1812), southwest Michigan, and northwest Indiana (1812-1835). Bailly established a trading post and missionary center near Chesterton, Indiana in Porter County in 1822. He also maintained trading centers at Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Montreal, Canada. Bailly died December 21, 1835.
