This collection includes photographs and negatives; Indianapolis Fire Department event programs; Indianapolis Fire Department records, procedures and scrapbooks; an index to Ohio and Mississippi River steamboat images; newspaper clippings and brochures about steamboats and flatboats, newspaper clippings from Indianapolis Fire Department collected by Harold Brown Adkinson in Indianapolis, Indiana ranging from 1877 to 1943 regarding the Indianapolis Fire Department, steamboats and flatboats.

There are also oversize fire alarm listings and photographs related to Adkinson's career as a firefighter ranging from 1890 to 1915 and undated (OBD051).

Biographical Note

Harold Brown Adkinson, an only child, was born to Hubert M. and Elizabeth B. Adkinson on August 22, 1906 in Indianapolis, Indiana. He worked as a salesman until he became an Indianapolis Fire Department firefighter in 1934. Adkinson and his wife Jean had a son, William H. He was fatally injured in a fire truck accident on December 16, 1944, died December 22, and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Adkinson took great interest in collecting memorabilia and particularly photographs of the Indianapolis Fire Department and 19th century Mississippi and Ohio River steamboats.
