Scope and Contents

The name "Lora B. Kempton" is inscribed in one of the two scrapbooks within this collection. The scrapbooks include newspaper clippings, advertisements and greeting cards from Richmond, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio, ranging from circa 1881-1900s.

Many of the pages include imagery of domestic animals, such as birds, dogs, cats and horses. There are 3 envelopes and 1 oversize folder to accomodate loose material no longer adhered to the scrapbooks. A 1900 advertisement for the Indiana State Fair and a "Wait for the Wagon!" Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, South Bend, Indiana advertisement and poem is included within the envelopes.

An 1891 book titled, "Bring Flowers" by Mrs. Hemans (b. 1793-1835) can also be found.

Biographical / Historical

Lora B. Kempton was born in 1881 to William J. (1840-1918) and Savilla J. (Ellwood) Kempton in Indiana. She died when she was 4 years old, on October 29, 1885 and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana with her entire family. She was preceded in death by an infant brother who died in 1876. Her little brother Forrest Ellwood Kempton (1883-1969) survived to adulthood and married Ellen Aline Fenner (1889-1972) in 1930. He was working for the U.S. government in Puerto Rico in 1918 and survived the earthquake there.

Her father William J. Kempton was born on January 2, 1840 in New York, New York to John and Jane (Marshall) Kempton, originally of Ireland. The Kemptons moved to Cincinnati, Ohio by 1850. During the U.S. Civil War, Kempton enlisted as a private in Company D, 146th Ohio Infantry on May 2, 1864. He worked as a farmer in Centerville, Center Township, Wayne County, Indiana. Kempton married Savilla J. Ellwood on March 5, 1872 in Wayne County, Indiana. Kempton died of heart disease on November 23, 1918 in Centerville, and was buried in Crown Hill Cemetery. He was outlived by his brothers John I. and Joseph Kempton of Richmond, Indiana.
