Historical Note

The 24th annual Indiana state encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic was held in Anderson, Indiana during May 12-14, 1903. The event had two parades, one of 8,000 veterans in the early afternoon, followed by a civic parade in the evening. The parade attended by Governor Winfield Taylor Durbin of Anderson and included a "living flag" composed of 1500 children dressed in red, white, and blue. Factories and stores in the city closed for the day of the parade. 20,000 veterans and their families attended the encampment, according to newspapers.
